The amazing thing about American food is the diversity of cuisines we have in America. There's Italian American food, Chinese American food, Thai American food, etc. When immigrants come, they bring their food along with their bodies. Then, this food becomes adapted and is eventually accepted under the "American" umbrella.
My mother is a wonderful cook, so we do not eat out often. She cooks us lots of different foods: Chinese, Indian, Italian, etc. When I missed falafels, we made our own together. Even though Americans can make a lot of good food, falafels are NOT one of them. Nothing can beat falafels straight from the Middle East, but ours came pretty close, if I do say so myself.
American food also varies region to region. The South (where I am from) is known for rich, fatty foods that are good for the soul, but not the body! Soul food is cuisine that was born out of slavery. African American slaves were given the leftover bits of meat and vegetables and they created a whole cuisine out of it.
