My favorite soul food creations are biscuits (flakey, buttery bread), cornbread (a dense bread made with corn flour instead of regular flour), macaroni and cheese (pasta and cheese), mashed potatoes (mashed, boiled potatoes, mixed with garlic, milk, butter, salt, and pepper), and fried chicken (before I became vegetarian). For the meat lovers, soul food is a must have when one visits America, but you can still find vegetarian options. While soul food is originally from the South, you can find it everywhere in the States. Southerners who move elsewhere can feel a little less homesick.
Some classic foods from Alabama are barbeque pulled pork, fried catfish, fried steak, pecan pie, tater tots (fried potatoes in a different shape from fries), biscuits and gravy (bread and a meat sauce), chili (a rich, meaty and bean filled stew topped with cheese), and fried green tomatoes (sounds bizarre, but it still isa favorite of mine).
These are all quintessential Southern classics. Some all around American classics, as I am sure you already know, are burgers and pizza. Burgers are delicious, and even though I am vegetarian now, most places do carry a veggie burger. A famous burger rivalry is between two restaurants: In N Out (from Los Angeles) and Shake Shack (from New York). Pizza varies in each region of the states. You may have heard of a New York pizza, which is a thin crust pizza, and it is HUGE! A slice of this will definitely cover your face. Another famous pizza is Chicago pizza, which is a deep dish pizza. It has layers of crust, cheese, meat, and sauce. It looks more like a pie than a pizza. There is a rivalry between Chicago style pizza and New York style pizza.
