The coolest part? Instead of using plates, the food was wrapped in a large banana leaf and pinned together with a tiny wooden stick. I had to use the banana leaf as my plate and eat with my hands! It was tricky at first, but after a few tries, I finally got the hang of it.
This week, I got to help one of my students prepare for a national English storytelling competition. Her story is about an angklung player, and she even brought her angklung to practice with me! The angklung is a traditional Indonesian instrument made of bamboo tubes. When you shake it, it makes a beautiful, soothing sound. It was so cool to hear her play!
I had a blast going to an arcade with some of my students and my co-teacher. The arcade was on the top floor of a clothing store, which was such a surprise -- I wasn’t expecting to find an arcade inside a store! We got to run through obstacle courses, jump on trampolines, and slide down a huge slide into a ball pit. Spending time with my students outside of school was so much fun!
This week, my students and I have been reading personal stories and news articles from around Indonesia. In class, we've been focusing on recount texts, which are stories that people write about real events in their lives—kind of like a diary entry or telling a friend about something that happened.
One of my favorite parts was reading what my students wrote about their weekends. They shared their experiences: from visiting family to playing sports or just relaxing at home.
