Food in Spain! YUM!

tortilla: Unlike the tortillas we have in the States, Spanish tortilla is a dish made up of egg, potato, and onions. (Imagine a thick omlet containing potatoes). This is my absolute favorite dish in Spain, and the most delicious tortilla I have ever eaten was one I was served in a restaurant here in Ferrol.

ensalada de atun: This is tuna salad served with fresh bread

paella: A rice dish made with seafood and flavored with different spices.

lentejas: Lentil soup!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I love trying new foods, so I felt excited when I tried the foods in Ferrol! Trying new foods is a great way to connect with people from an community because people are generally very proud of the dishes that are made where they come from.

How is the food prepared?:

The food here is generally prepared very fresh and is cooked with a lot of olive oil. Many people in Galicia have small farms outside of town where they grow their own vegetables and fruits. My landlord doesn't have children who live close, so he brings us fresh fruit and vegetables once every couple of weeks.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Yes! Food is defintely connected to the local environment. Galicia is extremely connected to the ocean, so there is a lot of seafood here. Some of the seafood dishes I have tried are:

percebes: Barnacle

pulpo: Octopus

mejillones: Mussels

zamburiñas: Scallops

marraxo: a type of small shark

langostinos: prawns
