Being on the coast means that people live off the sea whether as fishermen, sailors or shipbuilders. There is also an abundance of fresh water, here, because of the rivers and the rain!
The biggest challenges that people face in this environment are the cold and the rain. The rain is corrosive to buildings and roads, so the people have had to adapt to that. The rain also creates humidity which can cause problems in homes. The cold can also affect people during the winter.
One way that people have adapted to the humidity is by the use of galerias on the fronts of their homes. Galerias are like sunrooms that protrude just a bit from the front of a home and have a specific style of window. The galerias allow sunlight and warmth to enter a home while helping remove humidity which cuts down on the amount of mold that can grow inside. Galerias are also good places to dry your clothes when you can't hang them outside because it is raining.
Another way people have adapted to the rain and humidity are by using hórreos. These are wooden structures that look like raised chicken coups but are actually used to store grain and corn. Hórreos are raised and ventilated to help keep what's inside dry and fresh for when it is needed.
