While islanders have learned to hold their breath for up to five minutes to fish in shallow waters, no one can naturally adapt to exploring the ocean depths for extended periods. Instead, humans have developed tools that let us explore deeper and for longer. One tool I use is a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). While these used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, they are becoming more affordable every year. ROVs help us map vast areas of coral reef, collect fish samples and deploy long-term monitoring sensors, allowing us to paint a more complete picture of this environment, which exists in a state of perpetual night. Better yet, we can put people in the deep without risking their lives!
