Conserving Our Oceans

Introduction:

Portugal is known as having been one of the very first seafaring nations. Portuguese sailors explored the world's vast oceans starting about 500 years ago. Today, Portugal's identity is still heavily linked with the ocean. The Portuguese depend on the ocean for natural resources, food and trade. However, issues like climate change and pollution are harming oceans and the animals that live in them. To ensure future generations can enjoy all the benefits of the ocean, Portugal is investing in ocean conservation efforts to protect aquatic ecosystems.

What community need did I learn about?:

While in Lisbon, I visited the Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon Oceanarium). I loved it so much I went twice! The aquarium is recognized as one of the best in the world. The oceanarium has animals from every ocean: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern Oceans. While the oceanarium is a wonderful attraction, it also does more than entertain. At the oceanarium, there are signs that teach visitors about the importance of conserving oceans and that show people what they can do to ensure that we continue to enjoy the ocean for future generations. The oceanarium also helps support and fund efforts in Portugal to conserve the oceans that are adjacent to Portugal as well as those around the world.
