This week, my classmates and I took a week long trip to Palermo, Sicily. One of the first things I noticed about this new city was the weather and environment around me. While Rome is very hot and sunny, I noticed that Palermo has a breeze from its location on the ocean. Rome's mountains are far off in the distance, and Palermo has tall peaks lining city's back border. There is a port filled with all sorts of boats just 15 minutes' walk from the heart of the city.
What made this environment the most special to me is the fact that on one side of the city there are mountains and on the opposite there is a port leading out to the ocean. It's so interesting to have two very different environment in one city!
Because Palermo is on the coast of Sicily, its location makes it easy for ships to come and go. This brings new people, ideas and goods in and out of the city. Palermo is known for its wide variety of foods that are adapted from other cultures. This exchange would not be nearly as easy if Palermo wasn't so readily available to connect with people from different places.
