Zinnia and Traeson explained that they rarely have homework, but they recently had math problems that they had to copy down from the whiteboard into their notebook. There were a few multiplication problems.
Traeson enjoys playing football after school, and Zinnia alleged that she likes to study after school. Both mentioned that they just want to watch YouTube though and commented about a Caribbean YouTuber named Certified Sampson.
This is a hot topic here at the school, the debate between who is the best footballer (soccer player): Messi or Ronaldo. Both students jumped at the chance to say Ronaldo, but their yells brought other students over like a boxing match bell starts a fight. When things settled down, Ronaldo was still the top answer across a bunch of students, but Traeson mentioned a retired Italian goalkeeper named Buffon.
When I asked this question, the kids got up and started dancing and singing “Shake it to the Max,” a beloved song here that is a bit explicit. Music is integral to Belizean culture, and the students mentioned that they like punta and rap music.
Traeson dreams of being a footballer (soccer player), specifically a goalkeeper, just like Buffon. Zinnia listed all sorts of jobs she could do: a footballer, a dancer, policewoman, soldier, dancer, singer, and a doctor. The students here love football, and I find that most students want to play professionally one day.
