Electric Waterfalls

A kilo means a thousand, so a kilowatt of electricity can keep a 100 watt bulb on for ten hours. Therefore, ten kilowatts of electricity created in a matter of minutes could mean light for 30 houses for three hours a night.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Nobody lives near the Moramo waterfalls, but some people do live a mile away. If they lived near the waterfalls, though, they’d likely get harassed by the black-faced monkeys I saw at the start of the trail.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Many islands in Indonesia have a heavy monsoon or rainy season. Rain falls daily on monsoon days, often for an hour at a time. Mini-hydro is one way to harness the energy of all that fallen water headed for the sea for local use.
