Making Tortillas in Michoacán

Introduction:

Tortillas are an essential part of the daily Mexican diet. Of course, tortillas are easy to find in supermarkets and Mexican restaurants in the United States. As common as they are even in the U.S., I have learned some interesting things about this simple flat bread since interacting more with Mexican culture. I have even tried my hand at cooking tortillas! Keep reading to learn about different varieties of tortillas and what foods are eaten alongside tortillas. You might even find a picture of me learning to make tortillas!

What food did I try?:

When I eat tortillas at home in the U.S., I usually fill them to create a taco, burrito, or wrap. Here in Mexico, tortillas are most commonly eaten like bread alongside food. My husband Sam's favorite Mexican breakfast is tortillas with eggs and frijoles refritos (refried beans). The tortillas are rolled up and dipped into the beans or salsa and eaten much like I would eat a piece of bread. Below are a few other Mexican foods with tortillas that I love to eat:

Tacos al pastor is the most famous taco of Mexico City, and it's my favorite! Spicy pork is cooked on a metal spike that rotates by a flame. Once cooked, the pork is sliced off and served in a corn tortilla with pineapple and cilantro - ¡qué rico!
