One of my biggest struggles traveling around the United States is not having a car. Nowadays, it seems like once you leave the city, trains and buses become very limited, making it important to have your own set of wheels. Thanks to Europe's advanced transportation system, there was never a destination too far away that I couldn't access using some form of public transportation. To give you an idea of the convenience of travel in France, I was able to travel from Paris, in the north of France, to the south coast of the country--a journey of about 400 miles--in only three hours!
In France, people rely heavily on public transportation. The most common form of transportation, outside of walking, has to be the Metro, which is an underground train network in the city. There are over 300 Metro stations in Paris! These can take you to any corner of Paris in a matter of minutes! Last year, there was a huge strike, however, and we had no trains or buses for three months! This was really tough because people had to walk and ride bikes everywhere instead of taking the Metro! After this experience, I felt like I really got to explore Paris and find new places by walking the entire city.
