Diak ka Lae (Greatings)?! My name is Miraca Milburn, originally from Texas, but now I live in Timor Leste! In my hometown of Dallas, Texas, I love to spend my free time volunteering around my local community. I have volunteered for AmeriCorps, Meals on Wheels, and my local food bank. I don't know what it is, but I always had the desire to assist people in need.
One day, I was talking to my coworker and she asked me, "What would you do if you had a billion of dollars and no longer had to work"? My response was, "I would travel the world, stay in a country for 6 months, immerse myself in the culture and move on to the next country." My coworker smiled at me and said, "Why don't you join the Peace Corps?" To be honest, I didn't know the Peace Corps was still around, but a month later I applied. Now, I'm in the country of Timor Leste! Timor is a small island in South East Asia that gained its independence from Portugal and the Indonesian occupation in 2002. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I'm in the Community Economic Development (CED) program. My duties consist of working at Baucua's Vocational Training Center (CTID). Here, I teach leadership and business skills, such as bookkeeping, budgeting, resumes, and more! I'm excited to tell you about my journey through Timorese culture, traditions, food, and beautiful scenery. Let's go!
