Hi, students! My name is Montserrat Andrade Avalos, but you can call me Montse since most people have a hard time trying to pronounce my full name. I was born in Nebraska, surrounded by corn fields. When I was just six months olds, my parents decided to take me and my six sisters back to Michoacán, Mexico, where both of my parents were born and raised. I lived in Mexico for about ten years, where I was able to learn how to speak, read and write in Spanish. I also learned how to make tortillas a mano (handmade tortillas), I developed a love for chiles and I got used to the fact that all family reunions will eventually turn into a party where friends, neighbors and sometimes strangers (who often turned-out to be a lost cousin or somehow related to me) would all be there.
When I was ten years old, my parents decided that it will be best for our family to move back to Omaha, Nebraska, and I finished my education there. I have been living in Omaha ever since, and I am currently pursuing a double major in nursing and gerontology (the study of aging and older adults) at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. I am a certified nursing assistant, and I have worked in the emergency department and rehabilitation department of a major hospital in Omaha.
