29 Varieties of Bananas

Introduction:

Minnesota is an agricultural state. I have eaten endless varieties of squash, tomatoes and potatoes. I am well accustomed to seeing fields of wheat and corn stretching to the horizon in all directions. Root vegetables are in my comfort zone. I know how to roast them, boil them, microwave them, you name it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of fruit, too. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? Apples with peanut butter, apple pie and apple cider are a few of my favorite things.

Food in Sri Lanka is a bit different. Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka has more veggies than most of the coastal cities simply because its temperate climate is more compatible to that kind of agricultural. Sri Lanka, however, is also tiny in comparison to the United States. So, even in the hill country, I have access to all varieties of fruits a tropical country can produce. Most amazing of all, I have that kind of access year round!

What food did I try?:

The U.S. has a wide variety of foods from all cultures and countries in the world. In comparison, Sri Lanka's supermarkets are pretty sparse. Peanut butter is either unavailable or expensive, and all chocolate, unless imported, is made with milk powder.
