5:00 AM

I'm woken up by the calls to prayer from the three mosques in my village. I slide my sleep mask down briefly, examining the slits of light that are streaming into my room from my only window. I have two more hours to sleep. I adjust my eye mask and earplugs and fall back asleep.

7:00 AM

I’m awoken this time by the roosters in my neighbor’s yard, greeting the day eagerly. I get out of bed and immediately apply deodorant and wash my face with water from my faka, or water-pot. I boil water on my stove and prepare my morning coffee consisting of instant nes-cafe, powdered milk and white sugar. Over the next hour, I put on generous amounts of sunscreen, fry and eat eggs, pack my bag for the day and get dressed to be out the door by 7:55 AM.

8:00 AM

I make it to work right on time as the health post is only a five-minute ride from my house. I’ll inevitably greet no less than thirty people on my way, as folks are up and about heading to school and the fields at this time. I’m the first worker at the health post. I greet all the women waiting in the lobby of the maternity building and set to work finding my materials for the day.
