Meet My Young Friend, Sofía!

Other foods we might eat for dinner are mazamorra (a fermented milk and corn drink), an arepa (thick corn tortilla) with cheese and maybe a piece of fruit.

What is your house like?:

My house is green and peach-colored on the outside, and it has two bathrooms, some bedrooms, a kitchen, a big living room, a cement patio and a garage for the car. Since my house is on a farm, we have a lot of nature around us, as well as livestock such as cows and a feisty dog. There are big green pastures for the cows to graze in, too.

What chores do you have at home?:

On the weekends, I often have to clean my room and help straighten up other parts of the house. Sometimes I also help out on the farm!

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mom is really busy because she has a job and also takes care of my sister and me. She works for a rural women's association that helps empower women to run businesses and earn their own money. Right now, she's also a student at Maria Cano University, where she studies Business Administration. My dad is a hard worker as well. He mainly works on our farm. He also oversees another nearby farm, so he works long hours to maintain the two properties.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

My school starts at 8:00 a.m., so I have to leave my house at 7:20 a.m. most mornings. School ends at 1:45 p.m., and unless I hang out with a friend after school, I usually get home around 3:00 p.m.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I walk 30 minutes to get to school each day with a friend who lives near me.
