As I explored Comuna 13 with my tour group last weekend, I noticed the positivity and exuberance that seemed to prevail among the locals I met--and especially from my tour guide, David. Children were playing outside and neighbors conversed and sold their wares openly in the streets. Of course, Comuna 13 is not yet perfect, and there is still an area within the neighborhood that continues to be less safe for both locals and tourists. Yet, overall, the people of Comuna 13 seem to be taking the matter into their own hands and working hard to improve their own quality of life and provide new hope for future generations in their community.
