As my alarm goes off at 7 a.m., light pours through my window and I can already hear cars zooming by on the street below. I stretch, get up and listen to the sounds of the street outside. My room is situated on an alley behind a busy street in the neighborhood of Malasaña. After getting dressed, I prepare my lunch for school. Typically, I have a schoolkid's lunch: a turkey and cheese sandwhich (or a sammy, as I call it) with a variety of veggies stuffed inside and a piece of fruit. I also pack my breakfast for the day: greek yogur (yogurt) with musseli and fruit. The last, and most important, step is making my daily coffee. In Chicago, I'm usually a keurig girl. But, in Spain, I love a good instant coffee with a dash of leche sin lactosa (lactose free milk).

Once I'm packed up and ready to go, I leave my house and walk about 10 minutes to my metro stop, Tribunal, on line 10. After tapping my abono (transport card), I walk down four escalators to get to my anden (platform). The metro comes every two minutes, meaning I rarely have to wait! On the way to my metro destination, I usually go through flashcards on my phone or read a book.
