For this nature piece, we are focusing on mountains! I have been walking and hiking in the beautiful hills and mountains of Ireland. While exploring, I learned some interesting facts about how mountains are made and how many ecosystems depend on them.
Mountains are large, towering mounds of rock that are formed by the moving of tectonic plates under the earth, which are massive slabs of rock that our continents and countries sit on. When the plates push together, land gets squished in between and mountains rise. Some mountains are covered in green grass and forests, others are all rock and some of the really tall ones are even topped with snow because it is so cold up there!
I am always in awe when I see mountains. They are so tall that I have to look way up to see the top. This makes me feel small, but in a good way, like I am part of something much bigger than myself. Many mountains are older than dinosaurs, which is exciting to think about! It feels special to stand near something that has existed for millions, or even billions, of years.
