Navigating Taiwan: Understanding Culture Through Transportation

The TPass is a convenient transportation card that can be used on the MRT, buses, and YouBikes. People can pay 1,200 NTD ($38 USD) once a month to use a TPass to pay for unlimited rides around Taipei on the MRT, buses, or local trains.

A fun way to travel between cities in Taiwan is the High-Speed Rail (HSR). This transportation system connects major cities along the west coast, such as Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. They travel up to 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour), making long trips much faster and more comfortable than driving. Overall, Taiwan has a very convenient transportation system that helps people get around quickly, safely, and easily every day.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was very nervous. In Minnesota, I do not use the public transportation system because it is not very reliable or safe. So when I arrived in Taiwan, I did not know how to get my TPass or ride the MRT. I was grateful though because one of my friends, a previous ETA, helped us set up our TPass and ride the MRT for the first time.

After my first few rides on the MRT and getting the correct app to know which train to get on, I felt a lot more comfortable. If I ever go the wrong way, I can simply get off of the train and go the opposite direction within minutes. The MRT system is one of my favorite ways of getting around Taiwan now because the stations are within walking distance and I can always rely on the trains to be on time, clean and quiet.

The bus took me longer to get used to than the MRT.
