Whether you realize it or not, your family has its very own traditions. They could be small, happen only once a year, or even happen every day. For example, during Thanksgiving at my Mimi's, my entire family gathers in a circle. One-by-one, we toast and say what we are thankful for. This is our family's tradition! I learned about one of the biggest traditions almost every single family in South Africa shares! I learned about Heritage Day.
South Africa is well known for its diversity in languages and cultures. In 1995, South Africa officially created a day in order to celebrate this diversity. Heritage Day is now celebrated on September 24 every year. Families gather in large groups and have a braai (pronounced br-eye). Do you remember what a braai is from the Logbook I wrote? Besides celebrating together at a braai, most families dress up in traditional outfits worn by their ancestors to honor their unique heritage.
