Guten Tag from Germany! My name is Katherine. I am writing to you from Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg. Try saying that three times fast! Mallersdorf is a small town in Germany with 2,727 people. I am in a teaching program called Fulbright. I will be living in Mallersdorf for ten months and working as an English teaching assistant. That means I help German students in elementary school and high school learn English. There are so many interesting things I want to tell you all about Mallersdorf. For example, I live across the street from Mallersdorf Abbey. The Abbey is more than 900 years old, and 500 nuns live there. But first, I would like to introduce myself to you and explain how I ended up in Germany.
I grew up in Katonah, New York. I have a little sister, Hannah, and a little brother, Patrick. As a kid, I liked to read and play outside. I’ve always liked learning about birds. History and fantasy books were my favorite, and they still are.
After I finished high school, I went to Bates College in Maine. I majored in classical and medieval studies. That means that I learned the languages and history of people living in Ancient Rome and medieval Europe. The ancient Romans, for example, spoke Latin.
