In this state, the indigenous language Maya is very popular. It is named after the Mayan people many people in this region still speak it. Some of the local artisans taught us a few words, but all I could remember was jats'uts, which means "pretty."
The Mexican peso is still the dominant currency, but as the state is home to a lot of American tourism, a surprising number of vendors accepted U.S. dollars.
A bottle of water at the Cancún airport costs 90 pesos, or about $4. If you remember from the last logbook, the same water bottle in Querétaro costs 20 pesos. That's more than four times as much for the same thing!
My friends and I stopped in a little seafood place in Cozumel that sold tortas de camarones al ajo, or garlic-seasoned shrimp sandwiches. It was literally one of the best meals I have had in my whole life!
