Sacred Catholic Traditions in Peru

The organizing committee meets often to plan the event and make sure everything is ready. For the people of Huanchaco, this celebration is very emotional. It brings back many memories and brings the community together in faith, devotion and celebration.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

On February 1st in Huanchaco, Peru, the community celebrates Día de Víspera (Eve Day). This is the first day of a special celebration that honors la Virgen Candelaria del Socorro, the patron saint of the town. The festival is now in its 489th year. The town fills with traditional dances, music and celebrations. People gather to show their faith and respect for la Virgen Maria while also sharing their local traditions and culture. This event is one of the most important celebrations in the region.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Huanchaco is a historic coastal fishing town near Trujillo, and many people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Because of this, la Virgen Candelaria del Socorro is seen as a protector of the town and its fishermen. The celebration often takes place in public spaces near the coast, bringing the community together in a setting shaped by the Pacific Ocean. The festival also happens in early February, during the warm summer season, which allows for large outdoor gatherings.
