When I moved to Colombia, I knew that I would be living in a hot place and I knew that fruit trees grow in hot places. But I had no idea just how much fruit I would find here! There are stands and cars full of fruit on almost every street corner! Since moving here, I have eaten fruit I never was able to find in the U.S.! Some fruits I never even knew existed before.
Since I've been living in Colombia, I have eaten many fruits that I already knew existed like strawberries, oranges, coconuts and avocados. I have also discovered new fruits. Pitayas, or dragon berries, look like pink pears and taste like a combination of a pear and kiwi. Guanabanas are green with spikes but have a sweet and soft white inside. Uchuvas are small and yellow, with a tart but sweet taste. Tomates de árbol come in red and yellow colors, are egg-shaped and make a great tart juice! Lulos look like oranges but inside are orange and very tart. Maracuyás are also called passion fruit, have a thick yellow skin and are very tart. And tamarindos look like brown green beans but are sweet and sour inside!
