Being a Kid in China

Introduction:

Hi! I'm Xie Tianwang and I'm in fourth grade. I live in a very small town in China's Anhui Province in the middle of the country. Let me tell you a little about life here for kids like me.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

I often eat eggs and some kind of grain for breakfast, just like kids in America, but the breakfast foods are different. Sometimes they include noodles! It is also very common for families to eat leftovers from dinner the night before.

What is your house like?:

Houses in the countryside are more traditional than houses in big cities. In the countryside, a whole house is usually built around a courtyard in the middle. If a family can afford it, kids have their own bedrooms. In the big city, most people live in apartments very similar to the ones in New York City. One thing that is different is that Chinese people never have carpeting in their houses. They always prefer tile (even if it's cold!) because it is easier to keep tile spotlessly clean.

I always have to remember to never wear shoes indoors. Each person in a Chinese family has his or her own pair of sandals to wear when inside.

What chores do you have at home?:

Right now, as I type this, my friend Jiawei ("jah-way") is giving his dog a bath.
