Eating Different Foods in Nanning, China

Introduction:

Hello again! Not long ago I visited the city of Nanning for a weekend. The experience tested my limits of how open-minded I could possibly be about food. Although I never thought I was picky before, now I know that there are some things that I just cannot imagine eating. On the other hand, some of the foods I tried really surprised me in a good way!

Nanning is the capital city of Guangxi ("Gwang Shee") Province. A "province" is very similar to what we in America would call a "state", and most other countries use this term instead, including one of America's neighbors. Do you know which of America's next door neighbors also has provinces instead of states? Hint: just like China, it starts with a "C".

Nanning is very close to Vietnam, another country in Asia, and many of the people that live there speak their own languages and have their own customs. One of their favorite specialties is unusual foods. Let's take a look!

What food did I try?:

One thing that Guangxi Province is famous for is dishes that include lots of snails. Don't worry— they are cooked first! I ate snail noodle soup here and really loved it. At first, I thought the soup was kind of stinky, but when I actually put it in my mouth, I realized that it was delicious. Isn't it strange how sometimes stinky food can taste so good?
