Cleanliness in a Big City

Introduction:

During my past few months in Madrid, I have been surprised at how clean this city is! I did not expect the city to be dirty, but with 6.5 million people living in this city, I did not expect it to be as clean as it is. After doing some research, I learned that Madrid's daily waste production is 4,300 tons! With this in mind, I became curious about how the city stays so clean. I learned that Madrid has selective paper/cardboard and glass collection bins. The city also has litter bins that can be found all over the city. In addition to these containers, Madrid has three different types of trash:

  1. Brown bins for organic material
  2. Orange bins for mixed materials
  3. Yellow bins for recycling

The trash in Madrid gets picked up daily. For example, on Monday, the orange and brown bins get cleaned, while on Tuesday, the orange and yellow bins get cleaned. In addition to picking up the trash bins, Madrid also employs people to clean the streets and parks! I found it very interesting to learn about the different ways that the city contributes to its cleanliness.

What community need did I learn about?:

This week, I learned about Madrid's garbage production. As a result, I also learned the different ways that the city takes care of waste!
