Getting Places

Introduction:

Just like any other country, Japan has multiple forms of transportation. Japan is especially famous for the Shinkansen, or bullet train. With train routes all over the country, you can travel from one side of Japan to the other in a matter of hours. Other forms of transportation include the regular train, buses, cars and bikes.

How do people get around?:

I live in the city and most people use the train or subway system. During rush hour, the train cars are packed in so tightly that you are often pressed up against other people. This is one of the reasons personal hygiene is so important. If people are feeling sick on a given day, they will wear a face mask to prevent the spread of germs. This is important since you are in close proximity to other people. Although cars not as common as trains, people also drive. However, it is more difficult to get a driver's license in Japan than it is in the U.S. People also use taxis, but these are very expensive. Buses are also a convenient and inexpensive way of travel. People also use bikes to travel short distances, and this especially helps in rural areas.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I really like traveling by train. It is very convenient and accessible. There are so many places you can get to by train, and there's usually a train station within a 15 minute walk from anywhere you are.
