While everyone’s experience is different, and there are many ways to become an “explorer,” I believe that the greatest thing about exploration is that the opportunity to do so often comes when you least expect it. For example, two years ago I knew next to nothing about Cambodia. I had heard of Angkor Wat, but I had no knowledge of the people or culture within the country or the extent of its history. Now, I am living in Cambodia doing archaeological research and creating personal ties to its modern culture. My entire career as an archaeologist is composed of these sudden changes and willingness to seize opportunities that arise. In this Journal, I will talk a bit about the major events that led me to where I am today.

I never considered myself to be the smartest in the class, but I realized early in my academic career that the best way to be successful begins with not being afraid to ask for help. Whenever a subject in a class, a professor's research, or a cool hobby sparks my interest, I always reach out to find ways to get involved.
