Coastal Plants: The Grapevine

Introduction:

Around the small town of Primosten, on Croatia's coast, there is a very old tradition of creating rock terraces that are used to grow grapes for winemaking.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The vines grow in the shape of the surrounding rock enclosures.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

It is always very interesting to see a unique situation like that of the rock terrace grapevines, and how their environment, both the human-made enclosures and the natural wet and salty air, creates a unique habitat for them.

Where does it live?:

On the Dalmatian coast near the town of Primosten

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The water vapor from the sea helps to keep the grapevines thriving, while the salty air gives them a unique taste. Rock terraces also shape and guide the growth of the vines.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

If the environment changes too much or too quickly or the humidity (the amount of water in the air) becomes too high or too low, it may no longer be possible for these grapevines to grow in this area where they have cared for over thousands of years.
