Children's Day Celebration

Introduction:

Children's Day came about in 1925, when countries convened for the first conference on "World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children." SInce then, many countries worldwide have adopted Children's Day, but this holiday was not celebrated in Taiwan until 2011.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Children's Day was celebrated on April 4th, 2020. Children's Day celebrates children by recognizing their achievements. In schools, students recieve honorable mentions and usually enjoy a half-day of planned activities and fun to celebrate their success. In my smaller school of 56 students, the teachers and I organized station games, which included bubble and airplane making, so that students could earn prizes for completing each activitiy.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Children's Day was reinstated in 2011 as a National holiday in Taiwan. This tradition offers a time for parents and teachers to highlight students and their accomplishments. In Taiwan, teaching is a highly regarded profession, and it is clear to me that this holiday goes hand-in-hand in reinforcing the importance of teachers and the value of education: by celebrating student success, the student-teacher relationship is strengthened.
