Mobility, which means how easy it is to get around somewhere, is a key feature of any big city. In October of 1919, Madrid constructed a metro system to connect the city's 21 districts and over 100 neighborhoods. More than 2.3 million travelers use the metro every day, and 70% of those people are students and workers. During the school year, Madrid lowers its ticket prices by 50% or more so that students, workers and families can have more affordable travel during the busiest months of the year!
While the metro is the most popular mode of transportation, it is just one of a few that make travelers’ daily lives easier! With over 21 million tickets sold, more than 1,600.7 million trips are made via public transportation every year.
There are three main modes of transportation: bus, metro and train. For shorter distances, you can take the bus and enjoy the view while you ride through different neighborhoods. For 95% of the population in Madrid, there's a bus stop less than 0.2 miles away from their house! You can also take the metro, which is the most common way to get around. In fact, the Madrid metrorail system is one of the top metro systems in the world! It has over 300 stations and 12 lines to keep you connected anywhere from the very center to the borders of the city. Another option is the train.
