Transportation in Costa Rica

Introduction:

Costa Rica has a strong and reliable system for people to travel around the country! You can use buses, cars and even ferries to explore exciting places like the busy city of San Jose, the vast Lake Arenal or the cool Monteverde rainforest. Let's find out more about these different ways to get around!

How do people get around?:
  • Buses - Costa Rica has buses that go between big cities and stop in towns along the way. Buses come in all different colors and most have two rows of two seats. You can check their schedules online, but sometimes they run a bit late. So, it's good to be patient!
  • Cars/motorcycles - Many families have cars or motorcycles to go to school or work. They often share rides called carpooling!
  • Ferry - Part of Costa Rica is a peninsula, a piece of land that is almost surrounded by water. Because of this, they have a ferry system that travels from the mainland to the peninsula.
  • Ubers/Taxis - In big cities like San Jose, you can find Ubers and taxis, just like in the U.S. Most taxis are red, but there are also orange ones that go to the airport. They're quick and easy, but a bit more expensive than buses.
  • Piratas Piratas are special taxis not run by the government.
