Trying New Things!

Introduction:

Hola de nuevo! (Hello again!) This week, I am really excited to talk about one of my favorite parts about traveling -- the food! As a foodie, I enjoy trying new dishes and foods from all over the world. When I was preparing to move to Colombia, one of the things I was most looking forward to was experiencing an entirely new cuisine. Growing up, I only really ate Mexican food at home, so I knew that I was going to experience an entirely new set of flavors, dishes and spices living in Colombia.

What food did I try?:

When it comes to traveling and living abroad, I always try to keep an open mind about the dishes or foods I eat. Whenever I saw a strange dish, my first thought was, “I’m not going to eat that, that's weird!” However, I quickly learned that it is better to first try the food before judging it. A lot of dishes that I thought looked weird were not weird at all! They were just different than what I was used to. Perhaps my biggest example of this feeling was a food I tried in Pasto, Colombia called cuy, also known as, guinea pig. Yes, I said guinea pig!

Pasto is a city in southern Colombia, really close to Ecuador and Peru. Llamas, alpacas and guinea pigs make Colombia their home due to the climate and living conditions. The people learned that alpaca and llama wool was great for making sweaters. As for guinea pigs, they were tasty!
