Belize is known for its rich biodiversity and natural resources, so there are many conservation initiatives to help preserve and protect its beauty. For example, there are many wildlife sanctuaries, marine reserves and national parks for this exact reason. However, environmental challenges remain to this day, including deforestation, illegal fishing, and coral bleaching. Overall, Belize prioritizes environmental conservation through many different efforts.
When I first got to Belize, I hadn’t realized how big of a role the ocean has on its wildlife, people and economy. I was quickly introduced to an organization called Oceana that works to make sure the water stays clean and safe, so all the creatures can grow and live happily. Oceana is an international organization, but it is particularly prominent here in Belize due to it being a hotspot for marine life.
Protecting the Big Barrier Reef in Belize is important for so many reasons. It is where many fish, sea turtles and colorful corals live. When the reef is healthy, Belize’s beaches look beautiful and more visitors come to see it. This helps the country earn more money. A healthy reef also keeps the water clean, so we can eat healthy fish that won't make us sick.
