Israeli food is one of my favorite kinds of cuisines, and it's a super diverse kind, too. When Israel was founded in 1948, Jews from all over the world came to live in Israel and brought their home cuisines with them. Here are just a few of the countries Jews came from and what they brought with them to eat!

  • Egypt: You’ve all heard of Egypt, but did you know it’s a lot more than pyramids and Pharaohs? Egypt has been a mixture of African, Middle Eastern and even European cultures for thousands of years, and its food is enjoyed all over the world. Its most famous dish, and the unofficial national food of Israel, is falafel (fuh-la-full). Falafels are balls of crushed chickpeas that are deep-fried in oil and usually put in a sandwich with lots of veggies and sauces!

  • Arabia: Arabia is a very big, very diverse, very not-defined place that’s somewhere in the Middle East and maybe contains Israel. No matter where it begins and ends, one thing is clear: Arabians LOVE phyllo dough, a kind of puff-pastry that was either invented in Greece or Turkey, depending on who you ask. Either way, it made it to Arabia super early in history and quickly led to the invention of knafeh (kuh-nah-feh), my favorite dessert ever.
