An Interview with Mía

Introduction:

Mía is an eight-year-old from Panama City, Panamá. We met at a family camping event called Acampemos, which translates to “Let’s Camp.” The event was held at Parque Municipal Summit, Summit Municipal Park. I was volunteering at Acampemos with a group called Hiking Feminista, a feminist hiking group, to teach young girls like Mía about self-confidence and safety in the outdoors. Mía was eager to share about her life with me.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

For breakfast, Mía eats things like pan tostado con mantequilla y huevos (buttered toast and eggs).  For lunch or dinner, she’ll commonly eat arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) or mazorca (corn on the cob). She also commonly eats mezclas (mixed salads).

What is your house like?:

Her house is relatively small but has a large patio. Her dad keeps lots of plants outside as well. She likes her house because they can climb up on the roof to see fuegos artificiales (fireworks) on la Navidad (Christmas).

What chores do you have at home?:

It’s Mía’s responsibility to sweep the patio because there are lots of branches that drop leaves on it.
