The Opal Card That Can Get You (Almost) Anywhere

Introduction:

The bus, train, ferry and metro services in Sydney are the key to getting around the city with ease, in much the same way that Aladin was able to traverse the Arabian desert on his magic carpet. The transportation system here is in many ways like Aladin's magic carpet, able to effortlessly get you almost anywhere in the city! In Sydney, the city's identity and culture are interwoven with its transportation system, just as it is with New York and its subway system. Although if you're familiar with the New York subway, I think it's fair to say that the subway culture here is more subdued, as I've only occassionally come across the break dancers, singers, poets and panhandlers that are a vibrant feature of the New York subway. But even so, whether you live in New York or Sydney, its clear to me that the public transportation system in both cities is by far the best way to see and experience city life.

How do people get around?:

The way people get around will depend a great deal on where they are and and where they are headed. I have friends who live two hours away from the university and they will typically travel by train and then the metro. The metro is a relatively new, fully-automated transit system. The trains are driven by a computer!
