Fun fact: with this being such a religious and particularly Christian country, both the primary secondary schools actually have "Bible Knowledge" as one of their core subjects and main classes. At the end of 10th grade, students take a National Exam which score will determine if they can go to a better school for 11th and 12th grade. One of the required core subjects on this exam is Bible Knowledge. It is also required at the end of Primary School (8th grade), which score partly determines where you will be able to go for Secondary School. Then in 12th grade you take another National Exam and one of the elective subjects on it is also Bible Knowledge. As you can see, the Bible is a big part of people's lives here as they learn it all throughout school as well as at church on Sundays.
In Malawi, just like in most of the world outside of the USA, what we call soccer in America is actually called football. This makes a lot of sense as it is a game with a ball that you kick only with your foot. So you can imagine how difficult it is to try to explain how in America we call football "soccer," and how we call American football - football! As is true of the rest of Africa, football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in Malawi. It is mostly played by boys, but there is also a women's national team that is very good. The men's team... not so much. The next most popular sport is called netball, played only by girls, which is a mix between basketball and ultimate frisbee. Volleyball and basketball are also found here, though football (soccer) for the boys and netball for the girls are definitely the most common.
