Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

As I live in a student area, there is an immense diversity in spoken languages. I regularly hear German, English, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, and so on in this area.

For München in itself, German is the most common, but almost everyone can speak basic or fluent English. The accents are also extremely diverse in this regard, with most people here being quite multilingual. If I were to sum this up, München is as diverse in terms of people as a big US city like Chicago or New York, but its linguistic diversity far surpasses anything in the US.

What type of money is used here?:

Across many European countries, the Euro (€) is the standard currency. In München and in the rest of Germany, it is too—except if you live in Chiemsee and decide to pay in Chiemgauer regional money. This is a type of local currency that's only used in one place!

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

Plastic bottled water is cheap here, but an important difference is that the default style is sparkling water, as I mentioned in my last report. These come in packs of 9 (or at least the one I bought did) and cost around €0.19 a bottle. However, the bottles have a deposit on them, so you have to pay an additional €0.25 a bottle, which you do get back if you return the plastic bottle (this is called the Pfand system).
