To Be a Kid in Bucaramanga: Through the Eyes of Mariana and Valeria

We have three rooms and two bathrooms. Our kitchen is nice; we have a considerable amount of space so my mom likes it because she cooks a lot.

What chores do you have at home?:

We make our bed every day, and we (my sister and I) take turns washing the dishes.

What jobs do your parents have?:

Our dad is getting his Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis, and our mom is a psychologist who works at our school.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

Our school starts at 6:45 AM, and the teachers are very on time! School gets out at 3:25 PM. We have two classes that are each 40-minutes back to back, and then we have a 20-minute break or recess. Then, we have 40-minutes for lunch in the middle of the day. Sometimes we have ballet after school so we do not always go straight home to our house.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Usually, my mom drives us because she works there.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

On the days that we have school, we eat lunch at school. On the weekends, we usually eat in our house or in our grandma's house. Or sometimes, when we want to treat ourselves, we eat at the mall or in a restaurant. It is sooo hard to decide on a favorite food! Maybe BBQ ribs? Or hamburgers? People say Bucaramanga has the best hamburgers in Colombia. We love food so much that it is hard to decide on a favorite food!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, we speak in Spanish because it is our native language.
