Intercity Trains in the Netherlands

Introduction:

How can a small country encourage environmentally friendly transportation? Let's learn about the Dutch train system, and how it helps people travel easily!

How do people get around?:

To travel in between cities in the Netherlands, trains are by far the most common method of transportation. Many people at my place of work here in Amsterdam live in another city like Utrecht and take the train to come to work in Amsterdam, which is about a 30 minute train ride. This ride costs around eight euros (nine U.S. dollars) one way. You can use trains to travel in between cities in the Netherlands, or even to other cities in other countries! For example, last week I took a high speed intercity train to Berlin, Germany. This journey took about six hours and cost about 40 euros one way. Traveling by train may take a little bit longer than flying, but I always enjoy being able to sit in the comfortable seats (much more leg room than on an airplane!) and to look out of the window while I travel. There are a few differences between the trains used to travel between cities in the Netherlands and the ones that take you places outside of the Netherlands. Usually if you are going to a different country, you should reserve a seat online in advance which costs a little bit more money.
