Christmas Markets in Germany

The first time Nürnberg’s market was mentioned in writing dates back to 1628. Because markets often begin on the weekend of the first Advent, it’s a wonderful way to count down the weeks until Christmas and prepare with sweet treats, shopping for loved ones, and spending time together. Nowadays, these markets also allow local businesses to showcase and sell their delicacies and handicrafts.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Christmas markets also provide an opportunity to showcase the respective city’s regional specialties and offerings, such as the “3 im Weggla” and “Lebkuchen” in Nürnberg. In addition, “sister cities,” or cities in different countries that have formed a partnership, have become more popular to increase intercultural connections. For example, the sister city of Nürnberg in the United States is Atlanta, Georgia. This partnership allows Americans to experience a taste of Nürnberg’s Christkindlesmarkt. Other cities that have partnered with Nürnberg include Glasgow in Scotland and Venice in Italy. They even had their own stands in the market selling their own regional specialties and foods. This tradition is, therefore, connected not only with the cultural environment of the city but also its political and social environment.
