Maultaschen - Guten Appetit!

Introduction:

Welcome back to my adventures in Germany! I’ve continued exploring different places and new cultures, and I’m excited to share them with you! Since my arrival, numerous people have recommended that I try a regional specialty: Maultaschen. This ravioli-like dish originated in Schwaben, where Tübingen is located. It can be found in most German restaurants in the region and at most grocery stores and butcher shops.

What food did I try?:

Over the past couple of months, I have tried Maultaschen in a variety of different forms from various places. Literally translated to “mouth pocket,” traditional Maultaschen are a rectangular pocket of pasta with a ground meat, onion, spinach, and bread crumb filling. It is also nicknamed “Herrgottsbscheißerle,” or “God cheaters.” The legend behind this nickname stems from its rumored origins in Maulbronn Abbey. Because it was encouraged to refrain from eating meat during Lent, monks at the Abbey supposedly “cheated” God during Lent by hiding the meat in pasta dough.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was surprised at how flavorful Maultaschen is when I first tried it. Although Maultaschen can look plain at first glance, the various herbs and spices in the filling make this dish a delicious meal.
