It wasn’t lava that destroyed the city, but rather the toxic gas and debris (called "pyroclastic flow") which shot 20 miles into the air and spread to the town. Pompeii was covered under a layer of volcanic ash 19 to 23 feet (6 to 7 metres) deep!
