Living Next to Volcanoes!

Introduction:

Did you know that there are volcanoes in Italy? I live in Sorrento, but an hour's train ride will take you to Naples. Naples is one of the most populated cities in Italy. Despite the large number of people living here, there are not one but three active volcanoes in this region! Let's learn more about these volcanoes--why they are here, and what benefits and drawbacks they pose to those living near them.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The area of Italy I live in is called the Campania Region, and within it is the city of Sorrento where I go to school. This area of Italy is geologically active, which means that the land is changing in a sense. These ‘changes’ are better understood as processes such as mountain-building, volcanic activity and other Earth processes. Its funny to think about, but the surface of Planet Earth, including the continents and oceans, are all huge pieces or slabs of rock that are actually slowly moving around. These giant pieces or slabs of rocks on Earth's surface are called tectonic plates. You can think of these giant rock slabs as pieces to a puzzle: they all connect, and between them, there are seams where one piece end and another begins.

In this region of Italy, there are two large rock slabs (or puzzle pieces) next to each other.
