Whose Present in Every Colombian Community? Simón Bolívar, El Libertador

Unfotunatel, this wasn't quite in the cards. All of the countries that he freed became free, independent countries, to his great dispair. Nonetheless, Bolívar is considered throughout Central and South America as a great hero of the Hispanic independence movement, and he has a statue just about everywhere to remind you!

What community need did I learn about?:

Each community around Colombia portrays Bolívar differently. In Bogotá, the main square that has an old, magnificent colonial Church is called Plaza Bolívar. In the center of the plaza is a statue of Bolívar, holding a sword that is pointing down, and looking out on the crowd (he's usually covered in pigeons). Near the main square, a silhouette of a man with an empty heart holds a cane and looks down onto a book. This man wrote lots of literture about Bolívar in the 20th Century.

Similarly, the Plaza Bolívar in Guatavita is very quiet and pristine. A large, modern white church gazes down onto passersby. The brick tiles and large arches connect to the colonial style of Plaza Bolivar in Bogotá.

Next, in Medellín, the Plaza Bolivar is very eccentric! It has a large black-and-white-tiled mosque that's placed next to big blooming trees, and plopped on the ground are the large, chubby Botero statues. This square is far more creative and free form, in contrast to the Plaza Bolivar in Bogotá.

Lastly, in la Macarena, Plaza Bolívar is much smaller. In fact, its really just a war memorial to those who have passed away defending the country. Bogotá has a memorial like this too, with a very clear statue of Bolívar.

Bolívar provides Colombia a reminder of its fight for independence, and history as a free country.
