Who is Jean-Pascal Vachon?

Can you recommend me some songs? You play too much free jazz sometimes. Can you play more of this…

Sincerely,

            JP

The radio host responded with jazz recommendations within a week. This jazz station accompanied JP for many years, following him through his move to Montreal where he attended the University of Montreal and graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Musicology. JP’s desire to pursue Musicology stems from reading jazz magazines that introduced him to genres of music that had influenced jazz, such as classical music and rock. He also learned to play the flute, clarinet, and guitar. Prior to that, JP followed his parent’s advice to major in something practical that would secure him financial income and thus obtained a degree in translation at Québec’s Université Laval. Now a days, JP makes some extra money translating German magazines into French and English.

In 1990, still a listener of the radio station, JP married his wife whom he has been together with for 35 years. They later sold everything in Canada and moved to Vienna in 1993. He moved to Vienna with a grant, hoping to pursue a PHD. However, his trajectory soon changed when he realized that maybe getting a PHD grant was really just his excuse to come to Europe. He had traveled to Europe before, backpacking for 2 months, exploring all the major European cities. He knew that he wanted to live in Europe, but London was too easy because he spoke English and Paris was too easy because he spoke French. German, on the other hand, had not been an easy language to learn.
